As a recreational activity, it doesn’t matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run or walk making progress at your own pace on the courses planned to suit you. Orienteering is a fulfilling sport for runners and walkers of all ages who want to test themselves mentally as well as physically or who want to add variety to their leisure activities.

First steps to joining an orienteering event 

British Orienteering have a fantastic web site with all the information you need to take your first steps in this fun activity for all ages and abilities.

Basic kit to get you started

  • The orienteering map - water proofed or in a plastic case
  • Compass - reading a compass is quite easy and children and beginners will have no problem in picking up the basic skills needed to take part
  • Whistle – for emergency use
  • Watch – to check your progress
  • First Aid Kit – this will be provided by the organisers
  •  Clothing:
    – full leg cover (not shorts) is worn to protect from scratches and cuts
    – if its cold you will need layered clothes which are wind and waterproof
    – sturdy shoes with a good tread are essential
