LAYERING

Keeping cool and dry, keeping warm and dry

Ensuring we remain comfortable on our travels makes all the difference in the world. A little bit of knowledge here will ensure you’re able to cool of when too warm or, warm up if you’re getting a chill.

This approach to clothing attire is a called ‘layering’ and reclines around the ease of keeping cool in warmer climbs and warmer in colder conditions.

By ‘layering’ our clothing we’re able to trap air between the garments and keep warm or alternatively, remove layers if we feel we’re too hot.

Think of your layers as four garments:

1. Next to the skin - Base layer
2. Fleece - Mid-layer
3. Jacket - Outer-layer
4. Insulating jacket or gilet - Outer insulating-layer

Benefits of each

1. Next to the skin - Base-layer

  • Wicks moisture way from our body
  • Keeps are skin dry and healthy
  • A summer base layer is light and cool
  • A winter base layer is denser and warmer

2. Fleece - Mid-layer

  • Helps to wick moisture way from the base-layer
  • Helps to insulate our body
  • Comes in a variety of weights and designs
  • Can also be windproof

3. Jacket - Outer-layer

  • Windproof and/or waterproof
  • Protects us from the elements
  • Can be worn in conjunction with the base-layer and/or mid-layer
  • Comes in a variety of weights and designs

4. Insulating jacket or gilet - Outer insulating-layer

  • Insulates our body and is also windproof
  • Can also be waterproof depending on design
  • Should always be considered in colder conditions
  • Works very well in conjunction with the other layer types
